Harvard University SAT Scores: Full Breakdown

Harvard is one of the most selective universities in the country, and it certainly sets high standards for its applicants. This article talks about SAT scores and requirements specific to Harvard. Be sure to check out our other posts.

SAT Score Range

  • Composite average: 1550
  • 25th percentile: 1500
  • 75th percentile: 1570

This range means that about 25% of students are below 1500 and 25% are above 1570, which shows that obviously, Harvard is a competitive school, but you still have a lot of chances to make it, because frankly there's also a high range

Section Breakdown

  • Reading & Writing (EBRW): average 760, mid-range between 740 and 780
  • Math: average 790, typically ranging from 760 to a perfect 800

Even though many Harvard admits score near the top, a few students perform slightly below that upper boundary, which shows a well-rounded evaluation process.

Testing Policy

  • As of the fall 2025 admissions cycle (Class of 2029), Harvard required SAT or ACT scores, even though it was test-optional during the pandemic
  • Exceptions may include other assessments such as AP, IB, or other tests.
  • Harvard does not require the SAT essay or Subject Tests
  • Scores can be self-reported initially; official submissions are required only after enrollment

Should You Take the SAT?

For most applicants aiming for Harvard, a score within or above the 1500–1570 range, even with section scores of 740+ in R+W and 760+ in Math, is realistic and a good advantage. Even if you fall short, good essays, extracurriculars, or recommendations can still make you a Harvard admit.
