MIT SAT Scores: Full Breakdown

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is THE college for STEM majors, so it sets a high bar for its applicants. This article gives a detailed look at MIT's SAT score expectations. Be sure to check out our other blog posts!

SAT Score Range

  • Composite average: 1540
  • 25th percentile: 1510
  • 75th percentile: 1570

This means roughly 25% of admitted students score below 1510, and 25% score above 1570. This is a pretty wide range of scores, which makes sense as admissions officers review the student holistically, so there is more to your chances than just a test score.

Section Breakdown

  • Evidence-Based Reading & Writing (EBRW): average 750, with most scores falling between 730 and 770
  • Math: average 790, typically ranging from 770 up to a perfect 800

Since MIT heavily values math skills, high math scores are especially common among admitted students.

Testing Policy

For the fall 2025 admissions cycle (Class of 2029), MIT requires applicants to submit SAT or ACT scores.

  • They do not require the SAT Essay or Subject Tests (which were discontinued).
  • Self-reported scores are accepted for application review, but official reports must be provided upon enrollment.

What This Means for You

If you're aiming for MIT, a composite SAT score within 1510–1570, with a math score of 770+ and R+W score above 730, puts you within the middle 50% of admits. Strong essays, high course rigor, and research or competitions can also increase your chances. Check out our other blog posts so we can help you on your college admissions journey!
